Welcome from
Fr. Robert Jasany
Welcome to the website of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Cleveland, Ohio. We are a parish community with a long history. The diocesan history says that we can take as a founding date April 1854, when Bishop Amadeus Rappe, first ordinary of the new diocese of Cleveland, celebrated a Mass at the home of the Thomas Byrne family in what was then the city of Newburgh (later annexed to Cleveland).
The parish was known by other names in the 170 years since the inaugural Mass with the then new bishop. The community first had the name, “Holy Name of Mary,” then that was changed to “Holy Rosary,” which was replaced by “Holy Name of Jesus,” commonly shortened to Holy Name.
Often, we are confused with Holy Name High School, which had its beginning here (1914) as a parish school, but later became a diocesan high school and was moved out to Parma Heights in the late 1970s. We still have our elementary school, which also has a long history. We have had a parish school, under different names, since 1863, founded by Father Jacob Kuhn, a French missionary priest.
We are proud of our history. Other parishes have Endowment funds with substantial money. I always say Holy Name has a Spiritual Endowment that is based on the thousands of sacraments celebrated here and the millions of prayers that have been sent to heaven. I wouldn’t mind having the first kind of endowment, but the second is more to the point of why we exist.
Welcome to the Catholic community of Holy Name, where the love is Jesus is preached and practiced.
May God Bless us all,
Fr. Robert Jasany
